A new meta-analysis in the June 2026 volume of Journal of Vocational Behavior reviewed 515 studies across nearly 788,000 employees and found that role ambiguity was more damaging than interpersonal friction or even work overload, affecting both employee and organizational outcomes.

That should get every executive team鈥檚 attention.

Most companies continue to focus on:
路聽聽聽Productivity tools
AI adoption
Transformation programs

鈥hile ignoring one of the biggest underlying drags on performance:

Organizations have become too dependent on coordination because the underlying structure and role definition doesn鈥檛 provide enough clarity.

In my own research on overlapping executive leadership roles, organizations with shared or unclear ownership structures experienced:
路聽聽聽聽聽聽22% lower productivity
Slower decision-making
More organizational friction

And broader workforce research consistently shows employees waste roughly 20% of their time navigating unclear roles, decision rights, and responsibilities.

This is not just a communication problem. It is a structural problem.

The modern organization has become overloaded with:
路聽聽聽聽聽聽Overlapping mandates
Matrix complexity
Duplicated leadership roles
Excessive coordination layers
Unclear decision authority

We often assume ambiguity creates flexibility.

In practice, it usually creates delay, frustration, politics, and blurs accountability.

AI is now amplifying these structural weaknesses.
Many organizations are confusing agility with constant reorganization.
They are confusing workflows with structure.
And they are underestimating how much AI depends on clear ownership, defined roles, and decision rights.

AI will not eliminate organizational confusion.
In many companies, it may accelerate it.
